Dyslexia Defined
According to the International Dyslexia Association, “Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.”
Why Barton?
The Barton Reading and Spelling system is just one of many structured literacy programs. It is research and evidence based and designed to specifically address the needs of students, both children and adult, who need intensive intervention due to dyslexia or a learning difference. All of the training needed to effectively administer the program is provided with each level which helps to open up access to more students while maintaining high standards for delivery.
Who is Barton right for?
The Barton reading system is designed for anyone who
- Is at least 5 years old and in kindergarten
- Can speak and comprehend English
- Has an IQ of 71 or higher
- Struggles with spelling when writing stories and cannot easily sound out unknown words when reading
- Can pass the Barton student screening (can be completed during a consultation meeting)
